What we collect
- Your name, email address, neighbourhood, city and postal code, given when you apply.
- Your date of birth, used once to confirm you are 18 or older.
- What you said you could lend, and anything you later list.
- Records of exchanges: who borrowed what, when, and whether it came back.
- Reviews you write and reviews written about you.
- Technical data every web server receives: IP address, browser user-agent, and timestamps.
- Whether you consented to optional email, and when.
What we do not collect
- Card numbers or bank details. We do not process payments at all.
- Government identity documents.
- Your precise location. We store the neighbourhood and postal code you type, nothing finer, and we never read device location.
- Contacts, photos or files from your device beyond the images you deliberately upload.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
How we use it
To decide your application, to introduce you to members near you, to deliver the email the product runs on, to keep a record of exchanges so reviews mean something, and to investigate reports of misuse.
Other members see your first name, last initial, neighbourhood, profile photo, listings and reviews. They do not see your email address, your full postal code or your date of birth.
How long we keep it
Account and exchange records are retained for ten years after the account closes, which is what lets us answer a later dispute about who had what. Contact-form messages are retained for two years. Technical logs are retained for 90 days.
On closure we unlink your profile from your reviews so the review remains as a record of the exchange without naming you.
Where data lives
We operate primarily from New York. Data is held with infrastructure providers in the United States. A current list of sub-processors, including any located in the European Union, is available on request.
Data breach notification
If private information is acquired without authorisation we notify affected members in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay, and we notify the New York State Attorney General, the Department of State and the State Police, as required by New York General Business Law § 899-aa, as amended by the SHIELD Act.
Your rights
- Access: ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: ask us to fix anything inaccurate.
- Deletion: ask us to close your account and erase what we are not required to keep.
- Portability: ask for your data in a machine-readable format.
- Objection: ask us to stop using your data for a particular purpose.
Write to help@borrowportal.net from the address on your account. We answer within 30 days.
