A street already owns everything it needs
The problem was never scarcity. Four houses on one block own four pressure washers, and between them they run for about six hours a year. BorrowPortal exists to make the fifth household not buy one.
We started it after trying to borrow a wallpaper steamer and realising the only options were buying one, renting one for more than it cost, or knocking on nine doors. The third option was obviously right and obviously nobody does it, because knocking on nine doors is unbearable.
Three things we decided not to build
We are not a marketplace
No money moves through us, so we have no reason to push volume. Nobody is nudged into lending anything they would rather keep.
We are not an app to live in
The product runs on email because email is where a return reminder is actually useful. There is no feed and nothing to come back to daily.
We are not an insurer
We say plainly that we do not cover your ladder, rather than implying a protection that evaporates when you read the policy.
